Neighbours Catch Family That Jumped From Balcony to Escape Burning Building

A popular old poem said, 'good fences make good neighbours.' But this family were very glad they had no physical or emotional fences separating them from their neighbours on the day disaster struck.
The family were trapped in an apartment in Russia when an inferno started from pancakes that were left too long on the stove.
With smoke belching from the building, neighbours and passersby  gathered and held a sheet underneath for the family to leap unto. (video above)

According to the Independent, the parents threw their children, including an 11-month-old with heart disease, from the apartment before jumping themselves.
It was reported that there were no serious injuries from the recent incident, but Newinform.com said the father was hospitalized. Three other family members were treated for smoke inhalation.
Three fire trucks arrived to put out the blaze shortly after.
Say Hello to the 'Whale Vomit' Beer

Say Hello to the 'Whale Vomit' Beer

A pungent substance extracted from sperm whales is now an ingredient in the production of a special new beer. The substance known as ambergris or "whale vomit" is most commonly used in perfumes.
"The result is a pungent, animalistic aroma, musky ethereal perfume, full body, caramel malt and fruity flavours, very balanced bitterness," the brewery's website states. "Though the aroma may not be for the faint-hearted, and the beer isn't exactly vegan-friendly, the ambergris perfume adds another dimension to this unique tasting experience."
Robe Town brewers Maris and Kristi Biezaitis told ABC News that the idea for the beer was inspired by a friend's discovery of a lump of ambergris.
"When I heard that ambergris was used in the perfume industry, I thought 'I wonder if that could be used to flavor or spice up a beer,'" Maris Biezaitis said. "It was a relatively fresh piece, quite a smelly piece, so it was airing and curing in the backyard before I got hold of it."
Kristi Biezaitis said the beer has a "challenging" taste and stays true to its ocean roots.
"It tastes a little bit like the sea, it tastes a little bit like marine animals. It's really interesting I think," she said.

Man Bins Fellow Traveller's Shoes For Pulling Them Off in Airport

Disgusted man bins barefoot travellers shoes
"What will foreigners think if they see such ill manners? They will wonder about how low people's standards are."
This was the excuse an irritated traveller gave for throwing away a fellow traveller's shoes. The middle aged passenger pulled off his shoes and socks and laid down to nap, but this action did not seem to go down well with a teenager who sat nearby.

The anonymous 'vigilante' picked up the man's footwear and put them in a waste disposal unit in Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport in China.

According to the traveller - who recorded himself throwing the shoes away on Monday - the man taking off his shoes and socks demonstrated a lack of respect.

He said: "I saw a man lying on the seats with his shoes and socks off.
According to Shanghaiist, two airport employees had walked past the man with no shoes, but had not taken any action.

This is the video.

A video explaining what happened was posted by YouTube star Julian Cavalero, from Mexico, and has since been viewed over three million times.

Julian says that when the man took the phone back to the store, the shop assistant reset the phone but the picture remained.

Some people believe that the phone was hacked, or that the picture is some elaborate hoax.

Woman bitten by nurse shark which refused to let go
A swimmer landed in hospital after a shark bit her and refused to let go.
The 23 year old woman had her hand on splint as paramedics took her off to hospital after all efforts were made to get the shark off her hand. The determined died still stuck to the hapless woman.

Beachgoer Shlomo Jacob told the South Florida Sun Sentinel: "The shark wouldn't give up.
"It was barely breathing but it wasn't letting go of her arm, like it was stuck to her or something."

A spokesman for Boca Raton Ocean Rescue said the woman remained calm and there was little blood from the wound.

She was in a stable condition in hospital, according to Boca Raton Fire and Rescue.
Witnesses claimed other swimmers had been "messing" with the shark, the newspaper reported.
Nurse sharks are common along the US East Coast and grow up to 14ft.

Unlike other sharks, they are slow-moving and can remain motionless on the sea bed.

They will bite defensively if stepped on or bothered.
This Bracelet Shocks You When You Over-Spend

This Bracelet Shocks You When You Over-Spend

The Pavlok wristband
A bracelet that alerts its wearer of over-spending via electric shock is in the offing. The Pavlok wristband, though not a new invention, but would be put to use for the first time to curtail over spending in customers.

The idea is that the Pavlok wristband will be wired up to an online bank account so that, when the user goes overdrawn beyond pre-set spending limits, they will be given a 255-volt shock.
The plan is worked out in four stages starting with the customer logging into their credit card or bank account facility.
They then connect the device and set a spending limit.
When users get near their self-imposed limit, a notification will be sent to their phone.

If they go on spending regardless, the wristband moves into shock mode.

The shock is reported to be "slightly uncomfortable", rather than painful, says Intelligent Environments, the company that provides the connection between the device and the banking sites.

It emphasises it has been tested fully and is safe.
The wristband was first launched in 2014 by a US internet business intended for use as a way of shocking people out of bad habits, such as smoking or nail-biting.
20,000 Bees Pursue Car After Queen Got Stuck in Trunk

20,000 Bees Pursue Car After Queen Got Stuck in Trunk

Carol Howarth was left stunned after a swarm of about 20,000 bees followed her around for two days.
Bee keepers eventually discovered that they were following their queen which got stuck in her trunk.

It all started last Sunday, when the 65 year old, parked her silver Mitsubishi Outlander in the town center  during a shopping trip. While she was away, thousands of bees began to gather around the car, much to the amazement of passersby. A rescue squad of three beekeepers and a national park ranger were called in to capture the bees in a special box and by the time Carol returned to the car, the situation was under control.

She was thankful for their help, but her tryst with the bees was far from over. Little did she know that as she drove back home, the rest of the swarm was following her . “The next day I realised that some of the bees had followed me home,” she said. “There were a lot less than the first swarm.” So she called the beekeepers once again and they arrived at her home on Monday evening.

“We think the queen bee had been attracted to something in the car, perhaps something sweet, and had got into a gap on the boot’s wiper blade or perhaps the hinge,” added Roger Burns of Pembrokeshire Beekeepers, describing the first rescue attempt. “The swarm of around 20,000 had followed her and were sat around on the boot of the car. I brought over a cardboard box and carefully brushed them into there as quickly as possible as I was aware it was a big swarm in the middle of the high street.”
“I think the owner must have been a bit scared of the swarm that was hanging around and just wanted to get away without realising they were attracted to the car because of the queen. We were left with a swarm of queen-less bees in the box and then heard that the same car was spotted the very next day with a swarm all over the boot, still chasing it.”

Roger said that this was the strangest incident he’d encountered in his 30 years of beekeeping. “It is natural for them to follow the queen but it is a strange thing to see and quite surprising to have a car followed for two days. It was quite amusing.”

Two-Headed Goat Cruelly Murdered By Mother

Two-Headed Goat Cruelly Murdered By Mother

A two headed goat
A two-headed goat has met a gruesome end in the hands, (or hoofs) of its mother just days after its birth.
The little animal was born with two heads which were joined along the skull. This birth defect was stipulated to have been caused by some genetic imbalance.
The tiny animal was flourishing - and had even been feeding from its mother - when its short life was suddenly ended. Its mother most probably trampled it to death 'out of fear', despite previously allowing it to feed from her.

Floppy Disks Still in Use in the US Nuclear Force

If you think floppy disks are extinct, then think again. They have been discovered to still be in use in the most unusual of places, 'the US Nuclear Force'.

Department of Defence systems in the US which co-ordinate intercontinental ballistic missiles, nuclear bombers and tanker support aircraft are still running on "an IBM Series-1 Computer - a 1970s computing system - and uses eight-inch floppy disks", according to a government report.

But it insists they're safe for purpose, claiming they "still work[s]".

Picnic With the Dead

If there is anything stranger than praying for the dead, it is having a lunch date with them. But the strangeness of this fact does not seem to the deter the Pontiacs, a group of native ethnic Greeks. This small community whose history dates as far back as 1914 have managed to keep their old traditions alive. One of their most notable customs is the 'Picnic with the Dead'.
This event takes place yearly on the Sunday after Easter. On this particular day which is also dubbed St. Thomas Sunday, Greek families in the village of Rizana make their way to the local cemetery to picnic on the graves of the deceased. Many of them bring along folding tables and chairs, table cloths, traditional meals, vodka, flowers, and candles to set in the midst of the marble gravestones. No one is allowed to cry as the day is seen not as one of mourning, but of celebration in honor of the departed. Family members are seen smiling and greeting each other, “Christos anesti” (Christ has risen), while children laugh and play amidst the graves.
