A mum is recovering in hospital after her entire scalp was torn off in horrifying freak accident at work.

Stephanie Adkins, 30, was rushed to hospital when her hair was caught in a sheet metal cutting machine.

The mum-of-one had bent down to pick something up from the floor when the drive shaft pulled her hair - tearing off the skin around her head and neck, as well as her ear.

During a gruelling seven hour operation that night, surgeons were able to reattach the skin to Stephanie's scalp and her ear.

On June 14, six days after the accident on June 8, Stephanie, from Columbus, Ohio, underwent a skin graft and is expected to need further reconstructive surgery.

Surgeons had to take blood vessels and veins from Stephanie's leg to help repair the damage to her skin.

After the skin graft, an optical surgeon will access the damage done to her eyes as it is not yet known if her sight will return.
